AI Implementation Group

Carl Tierney

Founder & Principal Consultant, AI Implementation Group

I build AI systems for organizations where getting it wrong has real consequences — healthcare, defense, financial services, and international nonprofits. Twenty-eight-plus years in enterprise software, most of it spent responsible for platforms that moved money, held records, or both.

Today I run AI Implementation Group, where I help organizations design, govern, and implement AI that actually works. I'm also still building — writing code across nine projects spanning clinical AI, multi-agent systems, knowledge graphs, and developer tooling. I share what I learn from building real systems, not theory.

Background

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Vision2 · 2012–2025 · Dallas, TX

Venture-backed payments and CRM SaaS.

  • Built the platform and the organization from zero — $0 to $12M+ ARR, 0 to 30 engineers with 5+ year average retention.
  • Architected a multi-tenant, PCI-DSS-compliant payment facilitator spanning card, ACH, wire, and check: $1.6B processed, $32B under accounting and records management, 99.9% uptime at 280ms.
  • Patented cross-domain payment processing — US9262782B2.
  • Shipped ML fraud detection (−90% fraudulent transactions) and a domain-driven code-generation framework (−65% feature effort) years before AI-assisted engineering was conventional.
  • Raised $11M, secured a $21M term sheet, and led technology due diligence with private-equity and growth-capital firms.

VP, Products & Services

Univicity · 2009–Nov 2011 · Dallas, TX

Director of Enterprise Services

Blackbaud · Jan 2006–Oct 2009 · Charleston, SC

  • Grew the enterprise consulting practice from 2 to 70+ professionals and $0 to $20M in annual services revenue at 42% gross margin.

Chief Information Officer, pre-IPO

Inner Workings · 2005–Jan 2006 · Chicago, IL

  • Prepared the technology materials used in the company's IPO road show.

Integration Architect → Systems Architect

Unisys · May 1994–2005 · Blue Bell, PA → Columbus, OH

  • Conceived and delivered "The Data Center of the Next Millennium," unveiled at COMDEX Fall 1999 with Microsoft, EMC, Cisco, Intel and six other partners — the largest commercial SQL Server database built at the time (9TB), Active Directory with 50M+ objects, over three billion web hits daily, 4,000 transactions per second, and 345M simulated transactions per day. Unisys stock appreciated $1–2B in market capitalization across the five days of the show.
  • First implementation of Microsoft technology in NASDAQ's live market execution — the Level 2 Quote Distribution System, engineered for 4B+ share trading days.
  • Won a $180M systems integration contract with Norwest Financial (now Wells Fargo) to replace a mainframe system supporting 28 companies and 28,000 concurrent users.
  • Led "Very Large Databases with SQL Server 7" at Microsoft TechEd ’98.
  • Youngest recipient of Unisys's highest professional-services award.

For scale: the entire 1998 US holiday e-commerce season ran roughly 55 million transactions. This environment simulated 345 million per day — thirty times that season, every five days — in 1999, on twenty physical servers.
